Apple WWDC 2019: What we expect and how to watch for yourself http://bit.ly/2MmjqR6

Apple WWDC 2019 (that stands for Worldwide Developers Conference) will begin next week. At this annual event, Apple dishes out new software updates for many of its products, most importantly the iOS software on its flagship product, the iPhone.

Think of it kind of like Google I/O, but for Apple.

Below you’ll find all the info you need on WWDC including when it happens, how to watch the most important event during the conference, and what you can expect to see launched.

When is Apple WWDC 2019?

The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2019 will happen at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California, from Monday, June 3 until Friday, June 7. Each day will be packed with seminars, lectures, and announcements.

The Apple WWDC 2019 keynote happens at 10:00 AM PT on Monday, June 3.

However, the most important aspect of WWDC is the keynote that starts it all. This Tim Cook-led event will last for about two hours and start at 10:00 AM PT (1:00 PM ET) on Monday, June 7. It’s likely Cook and other Apple leaders will reveal new software updates and possibly even new hardware. Scroll down a bit to read more about what we expect to see!

How can I watch Apple WWDC 2019 at home?

The easiest, most platform-agnostic way to watch Apple WWDC 2019 is on YouTube. Over the past few years, Apple has livestreamed all its major events on its official YouTube channel, and it’s highly likely it will do the same for this one. If that happens, you’ll be able to view the keynote on any device with YouTube access.

However, if you own Apple products, you can use special, Apple-only services to watch the keynote.

If you own an iOS 12 device such as a recent iPhone or iPad, you can download Apple’s official WWDC app. In there, you’ll find links to watch the keynote as well as links to watch other events happening over the rest of the week.

Apple will likely livestream WWDC on YouTube, but if you own an Apple device there are special ways to watch it.

If you own a macOS-powered device, such as an iMac or a MacBook, you can watch the keynote on Apple’s events website through Safari. As long as you’re running the latest version of Apple’s proprietary browser, you should be able to watch the event without issue.

If you’re on a Windows or Linux PC, the livestream at Apple’s events page should also work in the most recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc. However, Safari is the only browser that’s guaranteed to work.

Finally, if you own an Apple TV, you can watch the livestream through Apple’s events app. You’ll need to be running tvOS 10.2 or later, which essentially means you’ll need a second-generation or later Apple TV device.

When in doubt, just head to YouTube!

What should I expect to see announced at Apple WWDC 2019?

Unlike Apple’s September event where it launches the latest crop of iPhones or the October event where it launches iPads and macOS products, Apple WWDC 2019 will be mostly about software. However, there could be some hardware surprises in store!

Here’s what we expect:

iOS 13: This is essentially a sure bet. The latest version of Apple’s mobile OS should come with a system-wide dark theme, and could possibly come with a revamp to the home screen (the first major revamp in ten years). There will also almost certainly be updates to Apple apps, including Mail, Messages, Health, etc.
macOS 10.15: There are rumors suggesting that Apple’s new update to its PC-based operating system will bring certain iOS apps to MacBooks, iMacs, etc. At first, it would likely only be apps designed for iPads with iPhone apps coming at a later date. If true, this would be pretty revolutionary. There’s also a rumor that Apple will do away with the iTunes branding and break up the app into smaller chunks, with a Music app, a Podcasts app, a TV app, etc., rather than housing everything in one program.
watchOS and tvOS: Apple’s operating systems that power the Apple Watch and the Apple TV set-top box should see some tweaks, too. However, the Apple Watch usually gets its time to shine next to the iPhones in September, and the Apple TV Plus service was just launched in March, so these two operating systems will likely get only a little love during Apple WWDC 2019.
A new Mac Pro: Apple hasn’t revamped its infamous “trash can” computer since 2013. Rumors strongly suggest we’ll see a new Mac Pro debut at WWDC 2019. The question is, of course, will it still be a cylindrical unit or will it have a more conventional design — or something else altogether?
A 6K display: This is a bit of a long shot, but Apple could launch its own super high-end computer monitor. With a rumored 6K resolution and a rumored 32-inch size, the device would certainly be incredibly expensive if it gets launched at all.

Google Pixel 4 wish list: At least 6GB of RAM, better battery life, and more versatile cameras http://bit.ly/2Goc4YA

The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are good smartphones. They’re both a big step up from their predecessors, but, as always, there’s room for improvement.

Luckily, those wanting more out of Google’s Pixel phones don’t have long to wait. We’re expecting Google to release the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL in October 2019. Here’s where we want to see Google improve with its next pair of flagship phones.

At least 6GB of RAM and a brighter screen

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL offer plenty of important upgrades over the Pixel 2 and 2 XL. The most obvious is the display, particularly in the quality of OLED panel used in the Pixel 3 XL. It might offer crisper, more accurate colors overall, but both the Pixel 3 and 3 XL’s displays are dim. They offer only around 400 nits of brightness, making them difficult to see outdoors when the sun is out. That means you’ll often find your Pixel 3 at max brightness outside, which — as you’re probably aware — is not good for battery life (more on that later). We would love to see brighter displays on the Pixel 4 and 4 XL.

One other issue that’s plagued the Pixel 3 line since launch are performance issues. We’ve experienced mixed results with our own units, but a ton of Pixel 3 users have complained about slow, laggy phones as the months go on.

First, it was the overaggressive memory management issue. Google fixed those issues a few weeks after they came to light, but we have to ask: Would this be an issue in the first place if the Pixel 3 and 3 XL had at least 6GB of RAM like other phones? We’d say no. If Google wants to avoid these problems with the Pixel 4 and 4 XL, they need at least 6GB of RAM.

A battery that lasts a whole day

I won’t talk about this too much because, well, I’ve already talked about it quite a bit. The Google Pixel 3 won’t last an entire day on a single charge. Since it launched in October, mine has struggled to deliver four hours of screen-on time on any given day. It’s usually around 2.5-3 hours.

This isn’t so much an issue with the Pixel 3 XL — many of my colleagues have little to no issues with the bigger phone’s battery life.

With top-tier phones powered by top-tier processors, it’s easy to blame the power-hungry SoC as one of the main culprits for poor battery life. The thing is, many other phones are powered by the Snapdragon 845 platform — OnePlus 6T, Samsung Galaxy Note 9, LG V40 and G7, and plenty of others — many of which have stellar battery life.

Some OEMs make their own optimizations to the software to make the battery last longer, while others simply try to cram in as much battery as they can. Whatever the case, it’s clear Google has some work to do to make sure the Pixel 4 doesn’t run into the same battery issues as the Pixel 3.

A more versatile camera

Google’s Pixel phones have long been heralded as the best smartphone cameras around, but the conversation has been changing this year. Google’s phones might be the best point-and-shoot cameras in terms of quality and accuracy, but there are way more flexible cameras out there.

The Huawei P30 Pro has a standard lens, wide-angle lens, telephoto lens, as well as a time-of-flight sensor — and that’s just on the back of the phone. This allows for one of the most versatile camera experiences you can get on a smartphone.

The Galaxy S10 line also provides a flexible shooting experience, even if the quality of photos isn’t P30 level.

Google can do a lot more than other companies with a single-lens camera, but that can only get Google so far. Important camera features like lossless zoom and wide-angle shots simply aren’t possible with a single lens.

If it wants to continue to compete for the photography crown in 2019, it should consider adding a few more sensors.

A design worthy of 2019

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL aren’t ugly, they’re just not really up to the standards set by other phones at this price point.

We’ve talked about bezels and notches ad nauseum, but it’s worth bringing up again. Smartphone display notches are still very much a thing, but the ones on the market in 2019 have either shrunk, disappeared completely, or been replaced by a punch-hole camera. The Pixel 3 and 3 XL leave a lot to be desired by comparison.

The notch on the Pixel 3 XL is the most obvious change Google needs to make with the Pixel 4 line. Even people that don’t mind notches seem to poke fun at the 3 XL’s notch. It’s just too big and too awkward.

The Pixel 3 line’s bezels are another thing people aren’t thrilled about. Personally, I don’t mind bezels around the display — they make it easier to hold the phone and, in this case, house front-facing speakers. I think if Google was able to cut down on the bezels and minimize the notch while somehow keeping the front speakers, a lot of people would be okay with that.

Face unlock comparable to Face ID

While we’re talking about notches, it’s surprising that the Pixel 3 and 3 XL don’t have any extra sensors to enable secure face unlock. It’s possible to implement face recognition through the front-facing cameras alone, but the best implementations are done with multiple sensors — namely a camera sensor and time-of-flight sensor.

Time-of-flight sensors on the front of a phone allow the device to take a 3D map of your face to help differentiate between your actual face and, say, a photo of your face. Done correctly, this is a secure way of implementing face recognition. We’ve seen it in devices like the Apple iPhone X and XS, LG G8, and others.

It’s time Pixel phones also supported face recognition of this caliber.

Long shot: A headphone jack

The Pixel 3a is proof that Google has the ability to include a headphone jack in its phones. Sure, it might make the engineering process more difficult, but companies need to stop telling us they “ran out of room for the headphone jack.” These ports have been in pretty much all phones since the beginning of smartphones, and taking them away is a step backwards.

I don’t expect Google to include a headphone jack in the Pixel 4 and 4 XL. When talking about the Pixel 3a’s headphone jack, product manager Soniya Jobanputra said “We really felt that consumers at this price point and this tier really needed flexibility [for the headphone jack].” That suggests Google thinks people who buy more expensive phones don’t want or need wired audio options, but, as our readers have pointed out time and time again, that’s not the case.

Xiaomi redmi K20 Pro render rear glass and pop up camera Xiaomi

This week we learned all about Xiaomi’s upcoming Redmi K20 and K20 Pro phones, which offer great specs for an absurdly low price. It offers the same incredible value as last year’s budget king Pocophone F1, and although it isn’t officially called the Pocophone F2, the Redmi K20 Pro checks all the right boxes to be the F1 successor.

In non-Android news, Computex took place this week in Taiwan. It featured some truly interesting laptop designs, like the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo with two screens. There was even a display for custom PC cases that you’ve got to see to believe.

Next week we’ll see the launch of the Oneplus 7, which retains the same look and feel of the OnePlus 6T. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of the Oneplus 7 Pro, but it still delivers on the OnePlus promise of flagship performance at a lower price. Early June will also see the release of the mid-range Moto Z4 for those of you who are heavily invested in the Moto Mod ecosystem.

OnePlus pulled out all the stops with its new flagship, the OnePlus 7 Pro. It may not be the best value out there, but it actually might be in the running as one of the best Android phones of the year.

The phone features top-tier specs, a fantastic 90Hz OLED display, and even a pop-up selfie camera in place of a display notch. Not only is it a big step up from the OnePlus 6T and vanilla OnePlus 7, it even has some of us thinking of ditching the Pixel for it.

Sun’s out, guns out, which means more of us will be heading outside for workouts. While there are benefits to traditional earbuds, outdoor athletes should remain aware of their surroundings. Jabra knows the importance of vigilance and developed the Jabra Elite Active 45e with safety in mind.

What is the Jabra Elite Active 45e like?

The earbuds are great for outdoor activities because they keep users aware of their surroundings.

These are unapologetically workout earbuds. The bulky housings are strung together by a TPE cable and stiff, reinforced ear hooks. It’s easy to shape them to the back of the ear, and doing so is well worth the effort. I ran, rock climbed, and cycled while wearing these without experiencing any instability. Volume buttons line the bottom edge of the right earbud and are easy to reach, while the left earbud controls virtual assistant access.

The proprietary ear tips insert deeply into the ear canal without creating a complete seal. This is good as it maximizes security while allowing outside noise to still find its way through. If you’re uncomfortable, try one of the two alternative size tips. Another great feature is the IP67 dust- and water-resistant build. This means you can take them to the dunes or beach without issue.

It’s disappointing to see the Micro-USB input, rather than USB-C, for charging. However, the earbuds support fast charging: 15 minutes of charging provides an hour of playback. Meanwhile, it takes about two hours to complete a full charge of the 500mAh battery, which lasts for just over nine hours.

Is connection strength good?

Yes, Jabra’s wireless products have excellent connection strength and the Jabra Elite Active 45e is no exception. These use Bluetooth 5.0 and are afforded a 10-meter wireless range. While testing, a complete disconnect didn’t occur until the 12-meter mark. This extra flexibility is great if you’re at the gym and don’t want to pick your phone up from station to station.

The earbuds operate via Bluetooth 5.0 and remain connected beyond the 10-meter range.

The only downside is the lack of high-quality codec support. It makes sense because audio quality isn’t a priority with these earbuds. The lack of support results in slight lag regarding command responsiveness and audio-visual streaming. This is one of the drawbacks of the SBC codec. Supporting it is affordable and doesn’t require much processing power, but it suffers from high latency.

How does Jabra Elite Active 45e sound?

Due to the IP67 rating, the earbuds can be fully submerged in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

The 45es don’t sound great, but they’re not supposed to. Since these workout earbuds deliberately allow the ingress of outside noise, audio quality suffers. That said, they sound better than a pair of bone conduction headphones might, all while still keeping you aware of your surroundings. Bass notes are emphasized to make low-end and vocal frequencies stand out. Generally speaking, clarity is lacking because of the de-emphasized treble response. Should you buy it?

If most of your workouts are outside, yes, these $100 earbuds are worth it. Connection strength and ambient awareness are key when exercising, and Jabra prioritizes both with the Elite Active 45e.
