Xiaomi‘s Redmi A sub-category is its cheapest smartphone range around, but it delivers a few features you might not find on other sub-$100 devices.

The Redmi 6A is the latest model in the family, powered by MediaTek’s Helio A22 chipset. This processor is designed for low-end phones, featuring a quad-core Cortex-A53 design, but it stands out thanks to a tiny 12nm design. Before the Snapdragon 439 and 429, not even Qualcomm had a 12nm or lower chipset for ~$100 phones — its closest product was the 14nm octa-core Snapdragon 450.

The Q7 also offers a 3,000mAh battery, a rear fingerprint scanner, a 13MP f/2.2 main snapper, an 8MP selfie snapper, and a 5.5-inch full HD+ display. So far, so unspectacular, right?

The Q7 has one major ace up its sleeve, however, being the only phone on the list with IP68 water/dust resistance. So if you’re looking for a budget phone that’ll survive a dunking, this isn’t the worst device out there.

There’s more to the phone than its horsepower though, as it’s also packing a 3,060mAh battery, USB Type-C support, a headphone jack, a 13MP and 5MP dual camera setup, and an 8MP selfie shooter. It’s an Android One phone, too, so it should receive regular feature and security updates.

Oppo’s new F9 Pro doesn’t quite offer the most bang for your buck, but it’s got a great look. With gradient color schemes and a waterdrop notch on its 6.3-inch LCD screen (full HD+), this device doesn’t look like your average mid-range phone.

Pop the hood and you’ll find a Helio P60 chipset, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, and a 3,500mAh battery with VOOC fast charging. In the camera department, a 16MP and 2MP pairing is on the rear, and a huge 25MP camera pulls selfie duties.

The phone isn’t perfect. It lacks USB-C support and NFC capabilities, but you can do a lot worse for around $330, something our own Lanh Nguyen found in his Oppo F9 review.

Samsung eyeing Galaxy Note 10, A series success in wake of earnings slump https://ift.tt/2ZlTE1t

Samsung has announced its Q2 2019 earnings, revealing a 55.6 percent year-on-year drop in operating profits. In the report Samsung published yesterday, the company said it was looking to the Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Fold, and the Galaxy A series to help boost its profits in the second half of the year.

Samsung’s operating profit in Q2 2019 came in at 6.60 trillion won (~$5.6 billion), compared to the 14.87 trillion won (~$12.58 billion) operating profit it reported in Q2 2018.

Update, July 29, 2019 (02:00 PM ET): We just got our first look at the pink variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10. We also have some information on the 5G variant in the Note …

It’s a significant drop, which Samsung largely attributed to, “The weakness and price declines in the memory chip market.” For context, the company’s chip business usually earns about twice as much as its consumer electronics division.

Samsung also noted “slower sales of flagship models and increased marketing expenses,” despite strong overall shipments. Its postponement of the Galaxy Fold release, which was originally scheduled for Q2, also may have harmed its revenues (though the company didn’t suggest this in its guidance).

Samsung’s revenue saw a smaller decline than its operating profits did at a four percent drop. Samsung posted 56.13 trillion won (~$47.53 billion) revenue last quarter, compared to 58.48 trillion won ($49.51) revenue in Q2 2018.

What’s Samsung’s outlook for the rest of 2019?

Samsung foresees economic and trade “uncertainties” — likely a refers to the Japan/South Korea trade situation — affecting a number of areas of its business throughout the rest of 2019. This means Samsung may continue to see a quarterly drop in revenues compared to recent years. However, one area where Samsung is more optimistic about the rest of the year is with the release of new smartphones.

“In the third quarter, Samsung will focus on successful launches of new innovative products – the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Fold,” said Samsung in its report. “It will enhance the 5G smartphone lineup to take the lead in the new market and introduce more competitive A series models in the second half to extend the ongoing positive momentum in mass market smartphone sales.”

According to The Investor, Samsung also believes the Galaxy Note 10 sales will surpass those of the Galaxy Note 9.

Samsung remained the biggest smartphone vendor by shipments in Q2 2019, but sales of the Galaxy Note 10, and especially the Galaxy Fold, are by no means guaranteed. The Galaxy Fold is among the most expensive smartphones Samsung has ever produced at nearly $2000, while the potentially $1,000+ Galaxy Note 10 may struggle to compete with the recent influx of high-quality midrange Androids.

This is probably the saddest movie on Netflix, and maybe one of the saddest movies of all time. Schindler’s List focuses on the true story of Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson), a German businessman who used his factory to employ and eventually smuggle 1,200 Jews out of a concentration camp during the Holocaust.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, and featuring fantastic performances from Neeson, as well Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes, this black and white classic will have you bawling by the end.

2. Roma

Written, produced, shot, edited, and directed by Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron, Roma follows indigenous Mexican live-in maid Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio). Living and working in the affluent Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City, Cleo struggles to navigate the strained relationships of the family she works for and the rising class tension in the region, all while dealing with an unplanned pregnancy to boot.

Throughout the movie Cleo is hit with one hardship after another. The results sometimes are life affirming, but this is still one of the saddest films on Netflix.

3. The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas tells the story of two boys, one the child a Nazi officer overseeing a concentration camp during World War II, and the other a Jewish child imprisoned in the camps.

The movie runs a pretty serious risk of equivocating the experiences of the victims of the Holocaust with those of its perpetrators (which, uh, yikes), but it still offers a pretty compelling look at how inflicting harm can cause both expected and unexpected trauma. On top of that, the ending twist is so sad it borders on emotionally manipulative.

This is definitely the weaker of the two Holocaust films on this list, but if you’re in for something sad, this’ll get the job done.

4. Tallulah

This comedy-drama focuses on Tallulah (Ellen Page), a homeless teenager who steals a baby from an alcoholic mother, and uses it to ingratiate herself into the life of her ex-boyfriend’s mother, Margo (Allison Janney).

This awkward film skillfully walks the line between comedy and tragedy. Sometimes it’s a heartwarming look at an increasingly dysfunctional family, other times it’s one of the saddest movies on Netflix.

Either way, you’re in for tremendous performances from Janney and Page.

5. Paddleton

Paddleton follows neighbors and best friends Michael (Mark Duplass) and Andy (Ray Romano), as they come to grips with Michael’s diagnosis of terminal cancer.

The film takes place over the few days after Michael decides not to seek treatment and instead take medication that will end his own life. Much of the story finds the two watching kung-fu movies, making pizza, and fighting over Michael’s decision.

It’s a touching and heartbreaking story of friendship and loss, full of all the inside jokes and habits that accumulate when two people have been friends for years. It’s without a doubt one of Netflix’s saddest comedies, let alone one of Netflix’s saddest movies.

6. Okja

Okja is rather perplexing to categorize. The Korean-American Netflix original from director Bong Joon-ho follows Mija (Ahn Seo-hyun), a young girl chasing her best friend across South Korea and eventually the world after she is kidnapped by a multinational corporation. If that sounds too mundane, Mija’s best friend is a genetically modified giant pig named Okja, bred specifically to be a new form of livestock.

This movie takes tragic, comic, horrific turns in equal measure, and it can shift in tone dramatically quicker and more skillfully than just about any other film. At some moments it’s one of the saddest movies on Netflix, at others it’s one of the most absurd. At the center of it all is a star turn from Seo-hyun, backed by oddball supporting performances from Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, and Steven Yeun.

7. A Silent Voice

Based on a manga series of the same name, A Silent Voice is the follow-up anime feature from the creators of smash hit Your Name. The film follows depressed high school pariah Shoya as he tries to make amends to Shoko, a deaf girl he mercilessly bullied in elementary school. Shoya has lived with the guilt of his actions for years, and after a failed suicide attempt he decides to seek redemption.

A Silent Voice is a coming of age story about dealing with and accepting guilt, and the unintended consequences of casual cruelty children subject each other to. Don’t let its colorful art style fool you, this is easily one of the saddest movies on Netflix.
