Raised by Wolves (September 3)
This is a truly epic sci-fi series from Alien, Blade Runner, and The Martian director Ridley Scott. He directs the first two episodes of this 10 episode HBO Max original series. In the future, Earth is a post-apocalypse wasteland. A ship is launched that carries embryos of humans, along with two androids that are charged with birthing and raising the humans on a new planet. However, a highly religious group of grown-up humans has now arrived on this same planet, and it looks like the two groups are not going to get along.
Unpregnant (September 10)
This HBO Max original movie centers on a high-school girl named Veronica. She just found out she is pregnant, but doesn’t want to be. She enlists the help of a past friend, Bailey, to drive her hundreds of miles so Veronica can become “unpregnant”. What follows is a most unusual road trip movie between two friends and what they discover about each other.
Coastal Elites (September 12)
This HBO special movie was filmed by actors in COVID-19 quarantine. Bette Midler, Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Levy, Sarah Paulson, and Issa Rae all play characters caught up in the current pandemic, as they try to navigate this new normal, while also dealing with issues of their own.
The Third Day (September 14)
This six-episode limited series sounds a bit like it borrows from The Wicker Man. The first three episodes center on a character played by Jude Law, who comes to an island off the British coast. Apparently, the locals have their own special ways of living on the island. The other three episodes center on another outsider, Naomie Harris, who arrives with her two children. She sees a very different side of this island and its inhabitants.
