Report says Galaxy S23 selling really well, but Galaxy Z Fold/Flip 5 not so much https://ift.tt/ZsPv2MA

  • According to a third-party source, the number of Samsung Galaxy S23 units sold best those of the S22 series.
  • However, Samsung’s 2023 foldable phones are not seeing similar success, according to the same source.
  • Samsung may need to respond to the lukewarm reception of the new Galaxy Z phones with some innovation.

Each year, Samsung launches two major flagship phone series: the Galaxy S line and the Galaxy Z line. This year, we saw the Samsung Galaxy S23 family along with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5. With these launches all wrapped up and Samsung out of flagships for the year, how are things looking?

Information from a leaker on X (formerly Twitter) gives us a little insight into this. Revegnus posted some numbers allegedly from Hana Securities Co., Ltd., a South Korean financial services company. According to the data, the number of Samsung Galaxy S23 units sold is about 22% higher than we saw for the Galaxy S22 series during the same period. Specifically, that’s an alleged 22.89 million units sold across the entire Galaxy S23 family.

You can now pay real, actual money to use Instagram and Facebook ad-free in Europe https://ift.tt/LoOcjih

  • It is now possible to access ad-free versions of Instagram and Facebook in the EU.
  • The recurring monthly fee is €9.99 (~$10.61) through the web or €12.99 (~$13.80) through mobile.
  • This fee covers all profiles across both platforms, but there will be upcharges for new profiles starting next year.

Whether you like it or not, advertisements keep the internet running. Although you can block advertisements from appearing online, those ads keep most of the internet free, which allows everyone of every economic status to access major services, including social media. However, the idea that some people would prefer to pay money for an ad-free experience has gained traction recently. The EU has even decided to regulate it by forcing massive companies to offer ad-free experiences to continue operating in the territory.

Today, Meta has done its duty to comply with this new law. Starting now, EU residents can opt to pay a monthly recurring fee to experience two of Meta’s most popular products without ads: ad-free Instagram and ad-free Facebook.

This new Galaxy Z Flip 5 Retro edition lets you flip your phone old school style https://ift.tt/2x8PIUp

  • The Flip 5 Retro is a limited edition release with indigo blue and silver colors on the phone.
  • The box would include a Flipsuit case, three Flipsuit cards, and a collector’s card.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a practical take on a foldable, one that has won the hearts of many people. The compact form factor, relatively lower pricing, and abundant color and styling options have helped popularize the flip foldable. Samsung isn’t new to the foldables game, and it’s not new to a flip-style phone either. With the new Galaxy Z Flip 5 Retro edition, the company pays homage to the iconic flip-style phone, the SGH-E700.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Retro is a limited edition flip foldable that will be available in Korea, the UK, Germany, Spain, and Australia from November 1 and in France from November 2. The phone will be sold through Samsung’s website, and quantities will be limited, though the company has not shared the pricing in the announcement.

Google issues advisory for Pixels impacted by Android 14 storage bug https://ift.tt/knZNJuA

  • Google will fix the Android 14 storage bug on Pixel phones with an upcoming OTA update.
  • It is also working on a way to restore lost data on affected devices.
  • The company has advised users not to create or log into a secondary user profile on Pixels until the update is pushed out.

Google has acknowledged a storage bug that cropped up on Pixel phones after the Android 14 update. The problem primarily affects Pixel 6 users who have multiple profiles set up on their phones. It restricts users from accessing the media storage on their devices, with no option but to factory reset their phones. Google is now taking cognizance of the issue and has posted a message on its community forums detailing what the company is doing about it.

Open. Close. Open. Close. The Google Pixel Fold is the world’s most expensive fidget toy in my hands. But I can’t help myself; it’s just addictive.

Two weeks ago, the Android Authority team’s Pixel Fold made it to me. My first impressions were both better and worse than I expected. Based on the images I’d seen, I expected the Fold to feel cheaper, but the matte back and the all-around metal actually feel quite premium. But coming from the Pixel 7 Pro and the even more refined Pixel 8 Pro, the Fold looked and felt very clunky. Especially the inner display’s bezels.

Apple Journal is nice, but it’s no Journey or Day One alternative yet https://ift.tt/9WKDdFp

Opinion post by
Dhruv Bhutani

Apple’s announcement earlier this year that it was foraying into the journaling app ecosystem was not entirely surprising; mental health and wellness are increasingly central to the company’s software decisions. The introduction of Mindfulness capture in Watch OS 10 and iOS 17 is just one way Apple hopes you’ll begin logging your mental wellbeing. Coupled with all the health data, it is possible to draw a correlation between, say, an elevated heart rate and mental stress levels. However, as someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression most of my life, I can confirm that capturing your current state of mind is only one part of the equation.

Journaling is an immensely personal activity that can help you relive moments or destress. Digital journaling makes it a lot more accessible.

Journaling is an immensely personal act that lets you pour out your exact mental state — positive or negative, onto paper. It’s no replacement for a therapist, but daily journaling is a highly effective way to relieve mental burden. While I’ve maintained a physical journal most of my teenage life, I switched to digital journaling a decade back when I picked up the Journey app for my Android phone. I’m also well aware of the extremely popular Day One journaling app.

I shouldn’t need to pay a premium for an unlocked Samsung phone https://ift.tt/zH3rGuU

Opinion post by
C. Scott Brown

On October 3, 2023, Samsung announced the Galaxy S23 FE. All its press materials said the phone costs $599 for the 128GB model. However, when the phone actually went up for sale at Samsung.com, the unlocked model didn’t cost $599 — it cost $629, a $30 increase. This was unusual, so we contacted Samsung about the discrepancy.

In its response, the company pointed out that you can still get the phone from its online store for the $599 price — if you buy a carrier version over the unlocked model. It also told us that Amazon, Best Buy, and other retail partners still sell the unlocked model for $599. The only exception here is buying the unlocked model directly from Samsung. However, the company did not explain why it made this change.

Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag2 is just as good as an Apple AirTag, if not better https://ift.tt/2gX6DTy

samsung smarttag 2 in hand keys 2
Credit: Rita El Khoury / Android Authority

Ever since I was a kid leaving for school, my mom would repeat to me, “your raincoat, your backpack, your water bottle, and you!” I grew up with this habit of double-checking I had everything on me before leaving home or school, but still, that didn’t stop me from losing or mistakenly leaving an item or two behind over the years. Now that I hop around Paris and nearby towns and countries a bit more, the dread of losing luggage, keys, or anything important is even higher.

An Apple AirTag seems like the perfect solution, except I don’t use an iPhone as my daily driver. So I’ve looked at AirTag alternatives for Android users and came away dubious. If anything, I’m really excited about Google’s upcoming Find My Device network and trackers — whenever they launch. In the meantime, Samsung has the next best thing: the Galaxy SmartTag 2.

The best translator Chrome extensions https://ift.tt/La9xyjY

Although there’s usually at least one website in your native language for any given thing, there can be plenty of exceptions — you might, for instance, have to go to a Japanese site to buy a rare Famicom game cartridge, or read a French article to find out what’s going on in a relative’s hometown. Whatever your translation needs, there’s almost certainly a Google Chrome extension for it.

The best translator Chrome extensions

You’ll probably only need one of these extensions — no points for guessing which one — but there can be reasons to consider alternatives, such as the ability to translate more than HTML text, or better results for specific languages. In any event, each of these options brings something different to the table.

Galaxy S24 series rumored brighter screen might have a new trick https://ift.tt/VUCyIqu

samsung galaxy s23 series lined up pink full size
Credit: Ryan Haines / Android Authority
  • A new rumor suggests Samsung is working on an Ultra HDR feature for the Galaxy S24 series.
  • The feature will allow the S24 to capture photos and video in HDR and show them back in HDR format.
  • The rumored brighter screen on the S24 would make it perfect for this feature.

During its I/O event earlier this year, Google introduced Ultra HDR for Android 14, a feature that allows you to take HDR photos and videos and display them accurately on HDR screens. While it won’t appear in the stable version of One UI 6 when it launches, it’s rumored that Samsung is working on including it in the Galaxy S24 series.

It’s rumored that all three models of the Galaxy S24 series will get Super AMOLED screens. Rumors also suggest that those screens will be capable of getting up to 2,500 nits of brightness. This would make them perfect candidates for displaying the brightness, contrast, and color range that comes with HDR photos and videos.

  • DJI’s latest offering delivers a plethora of upgrades, including a one-inch CMOS sensor and a rotating OLED display.
  • The Osmo Pocket 3 starts at a retail price of $519.

Three years after DJI released the Osmo Pocket 2, the company is back with its successor — the Osmo Pocket 3. The third generation of DJI’s gimbal camera packs in multiple upgrades that are major improvements to what appeared before.

The time between the Pocket 2 and Pocket 3 has given DJI plenty of time to think about how to improve its portable camera stick. Arguably, one of the biggest changes to the device is a larger sensor. The Pocket 3 features a one-inch CMOS sensor capable of handling a variety of lighting conditions from night shots to bright afternoons.

  • Apple is rolling out iOS 17.1, iPadOS 17.1, watchOS 10.1, tvOS 17.1, and macOS Sonoma 14.1 to supported Apple products.
  • iOS 17.1 is notable for fixing the image retention issues iPhone 15 Pro users face.
  • watchOS 10.1 brings NameDrop and Double Tap support.

iOS 17 has been a wild ride so far. It brings a lot of new features to iOS, but it also introduced some nasty bugs that soured the experience of iPhone 15 early adopters. Apple had to roll out a point release to fix the heating issues and then had to test out an RC build that fixed image retention issues. Now, iOS 17.1 is finally rolling out alongside iPadOS 17.1, watchOS 10.1, tvOS 17.1, and macOS Sonoma 14.1, bringing these fixes and new features to the audience.

iOS 17.1

iOS 17.1 brings an essential update for iPhone 15 Pro users, fixing the image retention issues some were facing on their new phones. Further, it also fixes the iPhone 12’s SAR values, which France had raised concerns over. Apple is also including a fix for increased power consumption that could occur on your iPhone if you were using an Apple Watch running watchOS 10.1.

  • An APK teardown of the Google app hints that Google may have renewed work on its AR glasses project.
  • The code reveals references to the codename “iris” and device gestures.
  • The code also suggests the smart glasses could be used for Google Assistant actions.

We often see Google cancel projects and products alike. You can even check out our Killed by Google list to see all the things the company has pivoted away from. Something we don’t see nearly as much of is the tech giant reviving an old project. But it looks like Google may have renewed its efforts on the discontinued wearable known as Project Iris.

In an APK teardown of the latest beta for the Google app, the folks over at 9to5Google spotted something interesting. It appears there is a string of code in the app that references “iris” and gestures you can use to activate Google Assistant. There also seemed to be code suggesting there could be actions like calling friends or setting timers.

What is a Roku TV? What you need to know about TVs with Roku built-in https://ift.tt/iU5NrRg

Smart TVs are ubiquitous these days, and while Roku might be best known for its add-on streamers, quite a number of first- and third-party TVs have its platform built in. Here’s a rundown of what a Roku TV is, and how the tech stacks up against the competition.

What is a Roku TV?

Simply put, a Roku TV is a smart TV with Roku OS baked in — it’s the default interface for everything, whether you’re using streaming apps, watching cable broadcasts, or playing a console game. The company licenses its platform to other manufacturers, some examples being Onn, Sharp, RCA, and Hisense. More recently the company has launched some self-branded models in the form of the Select and Plus.

Google Camera now has a new name to give you next level Pixel envy https://ift.tt/6oPsGHX

Pixel Camera

  • Google has changed the name of the Google Camera app.
  • It is now called Pixel Camera to highlight the app’s exclusivity to Pixel phones.

It’s no doubt that the Pixel flagships are some of the best photography phones you can buy. A large part of the success of Pixel phones as imaging devices is thanks to the Google Camera app, and the company wants you to know, now more than ever, that you can only find it on Pixel phones. Over the weekend, Google quietly remained Google Camera to Pixel Camera.

Apart from the name change, the description of the Pixel Camera app also now highlights new features such as Cinematic Blur. There’s a separate section in there for Pixel 8 Pro exclusive camera features like 50MP high-res photos and Pro controls.

The requirements for the app have also been reworked. The Play Store listing for Pixel Camera states that “the latest version of the app only works on Pixel devices running Android 14 and above.”

The version Google is referring to here is the recently rolled-out v9.0, which has separate toggles for photo and video modes, apart from other new features. The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro get an even newer version of the app — v9.1 — with more UI changes and controls.

The listing further states that the latest version of Pixel Camera for Wear OS only works on Wear OS 3 and above devices connected to Pixel phones.
