Android upgrade king Samsung now pushing Android 14 to budget Galaxy A24 https://ift.tt/7fwznKa

Samsung logo Galaxy S20 3
  • The Samsung Galaxy A24 is now seeing Android 14.
  • This includes all the major features of One UI 6, which first rolled out to the Galaxy S23 series.
  • The Galaxy A24 is a budget phone, proving Samsung doesn’t totally discriminate when it comes to upgrades.

When it comes to keeping Android phones up-to-date, few can argue that Samsung is king. Although Google pushes out the latest version of Android to its phones first, Samsung’s roster is much, much larger, but that hasn’t stopped it from being well on track to upgrading most of its lineup to Android 14 before the end of 2023. A case in point is that the Samsung Galaxy A24 is now seeing Android 14 (via SamMobile).

So far, we’ve seen this land in the Middle East and North Africa, but it will roll out to more areas soon. Be on the lookout for firmware version A245FXXU3BWK3.

Google TV’s version of Wrapped is here, and The Last of Us dominates https://ift.tt/ulTvERG

  • Google TV’s version of Spotify’s Wrapped is here, giving us a summary of top trends in movies and TV.
  • The Last of Us was the most-watched show, while The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the most-watched film.
  • Interestingly, all three of the top viewing days were in January, likely thanks to The Last of Us.

Earlier today, Spotify rolled out its annual Wrapped feature. This gives you an overview of your listening habits over the past year while also giving the world an overview of the top trends on the service. Now, Google TV is rolling out its own version of Wrapped. This gives us a great look at the top content of the year as well as some other data points.

Unfortunately, Google TV doesn’t fully replicate Wrapped because it doesn’t give you an overview of your personal viewing stats. However, there’s still some exciting stuff gleaned here from the world at large.

Nothing Phone 2 vs Google Pixel 7a https://ift.tt/qjbv6At

After reasonable success with last year’s Nothing Phone, the fledgling brand is back once more with the Nothing Phone 2. This time around, Nothing is spreading its reach further, formally bringing its phones to the US for the first time. Just like the Pixel 7a, the Nothing Phone 2 promises a high-end experience while keeping the costs significantly lower than the competition. But which phone is the better pick? We take a closer look in this Nothing Phone 2 vs Google Pixel 7a comparison.

Google’s ad-blocker crackdown may be changing how people are using YouTube https://ift.tt/4uFRjoa

  • Data shows Google’s attempts to force people to watch YouTube ads are having an effect on user behavior.
  • 22% of users surveyed said the crackdown is more likely to make them use an ad-blocker.
  • 16% of users surveyed claim they’ll spend less time on the platform.

Ever since YouTube imposed its crackdown on ad-blockers, users have been pretty vocal about their disdain for ads on the platform. Now, new data shows how that crackdown is affecting the behavior of the site’s users.

Data security and privacy website All About Cookies reportedly surveyed 1,000 YouTube users. In that survey, users were able to select multiple options from a list of six choices that included:

After a string of severe outages in recent days, it looks like we have more issues to report for OpenAI’s ChatGPT service. According to DownDetector, there are already thousands of reports of problems using ChatGPT.

User reports aren’t as reliable as official reports from a company itself. To its credit, OpenAI has not disclosed an outage, at least not according to its status page. In the past, OpenAI has been good about posting problems here, so it’s possible users are seeing a very temporary glitch in the system.

Verizon’s holiday deals can land you $1,900 of tech for any old phone https://ift.tt/dBOmx86

Verizon might just have the best holiday deals of any carrier. Not only can trading in your old phone land you a flagship smartphone such as the Pixel 8 Pro or the iPhone 15 Pro, but you can also get a free wearable and tablet thrown in for good measure. The total value you could be saving can reach as much as $1,900,

There are obviously hoops that you have to jump through to take full advantage of these amazing deals. The trade-in is a big one, but this is a very easy one to meet. The holiday offers give you maximum trade-in credit for any old phone, almost irrespective of its value. For instance, trading in the decade-old iPhone 6 scores you $1,000 off the iPhone 15 Pro, which is pretty crazy.

That same deal also lets you add the Apple Watch SE and an iPad for no extra charge. The only caveat is that you need to add a line of service for every device you’re getting for free. For the iPhone 15 Pro, an Unlimited Ultimate Plan is required.

Publicity stunts like the Nothing Chats drama aren’t a guaranteed success every single time, but I still feel like Nothing’s and Carl Pei’s shenanigans shouldn’t stand in the way of their — surprisingly — excellent products. I’ve been a fan of the Ear 1 and Ear 2 for a couple of years and I finally managed to get my hands on the Nothing Phone 2 (). I didn’t expect to be as impressed by the phone and Nothing OS as I am, nor did I expect Nothing OS 2.5 to push things even further. But the latest software really takes Nothing’s experience to another level. Here are my favorite Nothing OS 2.5 features.

How can I get Nothing OS 2.5?

Nothing OS 2.5 builds on everything we’ve seen with Nothing OS 2.0 and Android 14, but it’s still currently in beta. Nothing is testing it publicly on the Phone 2. You can join the beta by following the steps below or on Nothing’s community forum:

Spotify tacitly admits it will go out of business if it gives artists fair pay https://ift.tt/Efxs7yj

  • Spotify plans to pull its service out of Uruguay after the passing of a bill that would require “fair and equitable remuneration” for artists.
  • The streaming platform states that “additional payments would make our business untenable.”
  • If the bill isn’t changed, Spotify says it will begin phasing out the service on January 1, 2024.

Pay has been a sticking point between Spotify and artists for years now. A new bill in Uruguay aims to fix the problem, but Spotify is threatening to leave the country if the bill isn’t changed.

According to The Guardian, Uruguay’s government voted on a budget bill in October that included two articles related to streaming media. Article 284 says that social media and the internet are to be added “as formats for which, if a song is reproduced, the performer is entitled to financial remuneration.” While article 285 states that the “right to a fair and equitable remuneration” will be added to copyright law. By remuneration, these articles are referring to authors, composers, performers, directors, and screenwriters.

I don’t like having to charge one more device each day, and I can’t be bothered to type out a text message from the confines of my wrist. Give me a reliable GPS watch or tracker, on the other hand, with weeks of battery life and accurate tracking to keep up with my weekly running mileage, and I’ll be happy for a long, long time. Does the iPhone 15 keep up with the best Android alternatives? https://ift.tt/N6IPVXr

On paper, there’s very little reason to get excited about Apple’s iPhone 15. It has a chipset we’ve seen before, a design that hasn’t changed in years, and cameras that cover the basics but don’t really reach for the stars. And yet, it’s probably going to be one of the most popular phones over the next 12 months. As a reviewer for Android Authority, I’ve spent plenty of time with the best of Android, but I’m also very familiar with what Apple has to offer on the iOS side. After all, you have to know what the competition is doing to know what you’re talking about. And I have a few ideas of why the iPhone’s popularity endures, so let’s look at how the iPhone 15 actually fares against its best Android rivals.

For our purposes, we’re only worried about the base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, along with their similarly priced competitors. That means we’ll look at the Samsung Galaxy S23, OnePlus 11, Google Pixel 8, and Motorola Edge Plus (2023) as our Android baseline and skip the Pro-grade models on both sides. You can check out our full thoughts on the iPhone 15 Pro here.

The best Plex alternative in 2023 is Jellyfin, and you really should try it https://ift.tt/MZKTH5n

Plex vs Jellyfin logos angled
Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

Self-hosting is an increasingly popular alternative for those looking to escape the convoluted (and expensive) content-streaming landscape and return to a more traditional personal ownership approach to their media collection. Once you’ve bought your fancy new Network Attached Storage (NAS) and filled it with your favorite movies, the next step is to figure out what software to run on it.

There are at least two solid options for serving up your media collection; it’s a choice of Jellyfin vs Plex. Plex is the big name in town, but installing it didn’t cross my mind after recently rebuilding my DIY NAS. I’ve never been keen on Plex’s increasing insistence on serving up third-party content, and the all too real risk of compromised user data (as the recent data leak showed) doesn’t gel with the true self-hosted ethos. I’m not alone in looking for a solid Plex alternative.

The OnePlus Open is probably my favorite foldable phone right now. It gets so many things right thanks, in part, to OPPO’s head start with the Find N series — but it’s not perfect.
